Dolby Cinema: HDR and laser projection against Imax and home cinema

Faced with the democratization of the home theater, cinemas banking on a new unique technology to entice moviegoers: the HDR, which significantly improves the realism.

Dolby sound specialist extends its influence in the film industry with the launch of "Dolby Cinema", a competing certification Imax rooms extravaganza cinema.

When the home theater catches cinema

With advances in audiovisual public in recent years, and with the imminent democratization of Ultra HD for individuals, households are already or will soon be better equipped than cinemas. Many rooms have gone digital in a rush, not to miss the train of 3D, while making concessions on quality (particularly on brightness).

Cinemas must distinguish themselves not to suffer indirect competition from home theater. They invest to do this in a new technology, still inaccessible to individuals and even more noticeable than the HFR, 4K, 3D, and the three-dimensional spatial sound: the HDR.

The HDR for high dynamic range and wide dynamic range, is to capture and simultaneously deliver deeper blacks, brighter whites and more vibrant colors. This is to keep the details of more contrasting scenes? which now needed to do properly expose a part of the image? which greatly enhances the realism.

The rooms are banking on a proprietary technology, the HDR

It is in this context that fits "Dolby Cinema", a label guaranteeing respect several quality criteria, including the ability to render HDR.

Dolby Cinema brings together several existing house technologies, but it also defines the mood criteria. The witness imagined by Dolby movies (video below) thus comprises illustrated ramps, illuminated and sound systems in accordance with the universe of the film to progressively immerse the viewer (which would imply to terminate the trailers and commercials ). Indoor label prescribed premium seating and optimum field of view for all seats, including through a very large screen size.

Technically, certified rooms especially be based on the new standard Dolby Vision. This has implications for turning (high dynamic cameras such as the Arri Alexa and Sony CineAlta) and for post-production, especially for projection. It will be based ultimately on a pair of Laser 6P Christie projectors in six primary colors, which are not yet available but will deliver 72,000 lumens 4K 2D and will be able to maintain 90% brightness in Dolby 3D. The rooms are naturally equipped with Dolby Atmos (spatial sound in 3D on up to 64 channels) and compatible HFR (48 f / s and above).

A phased deployment

The first movie to adopt Dolby Cinema will open at the end of the month in the Netherlands in Eindhoven. Two other cinemas JT Cinemas then open in other cities. Then it was the turn of the Spanish chain UCI to the mall cinema Maquinista in Barcelona. Dolby has the ambition to quickly exceed Imax, which currently has about 700 screens worldwide.

Dolby will list any movie but according to The Hollywood Reporter, Disney will adopt the standard for Dolby Vision Star Wars: The Awakening of the Force J. J. Abrams, Tomorrowland Brad Bird and Inside Out, the next Pixar.

No Dolby Cinema is still expected in France but some premium channels did not wait Dolby and Christie to make the laser projection, dynamics and broader color spectrum. Kinepolis network actually enjoyed the film The Hobbit: The Battle of Five Armies to inaugurate his own label "Laser Ultra '. Cinemas Antwerp, Brussels, Lomme (Lille) and Madrid have now equipped rooms of a Dolby Atmos sound and a Barco projector can deliver 4K at 60 frames / s with 60,000 lumens .

Dolby Cinema is undoubtedly good news for movie buffs. Unlike the Imax? whose amazing almost square ratio has serious implications both artistic and technical, and therefore concerns only a minority of movies? Dolby Cinema focuses on quality. It thus constitutes a certification that can be democratized, whose cinemas, which do not communicate almost on their equipment, urgently need.
